IPSC Weapon Divisions
A quick look at IPSC's nine official divisions.
IPSC organizes equipment into specific divisions so shooters with similar gear compete against each other: Open, Standard, Production, Production Optics, Classic, Revolver, PCC, Mini Rifle, and Shotgun.
Open division allows the most equipment freedom (compensators, optics, extended magazines), while Production and Classic impose tighter restrictions, requiring equipment closer to factory configuration.
PCC (Pistol Caliber Carbine) and Mini Rifle are carbine divisions, and Shotgun is the dedicated shotgun division.

Why Divisions Exist
Because equipment has such a large effect on a shooter's potential speed and accuracy — compensators reduce recoil, red-dot optics speed up target acquisition, and extended magazines reduce the need to reload — IPSC groups competitors into divisions so that results reflect shooting skill rather than equipment budget.
A shooter competing in Production, for example, is only compared against other Production shooters, even though every division shoots the same stages in the same match.
Newer divisions, such as Production Optics, exist specifically to keep pace with equipment trends — in this case, red-dot-equipped pistols built to otherwise production-like specifications — without forcing shooters into either the stricter Production ruleset or the far more permissive Open division.
Choosing a Division as a New Shooter
Many new competitors start in Production or Classic, since both divisions restrict equipment closer to a factory configuration, which keeps entry costs lower and lets new shooters focus on fundamentals rather than equipment optimization.
Open division, at the other end of the spectrum, permits compensators, magnified or red-dot optics, and extended-capacity magazines, which is why it tends to attract more experienced competitors chasing the fastest possible stage times.
