IPSC Scoring System
Hit Factor, A/C/D scoring zones, and how the final result is calculated.
IPSC paper targets are typically divided into A, C, and D scoring zones, each worth different points; hits in the central A-zone score highest.
In Comstock scoring (the most common method), a competitor's stage score comes from dividing total points scored by the time taken — a metric called the Hit Factor.
Some stages use "Fixed Time" or "Virginia Count" methods, where the number of rounds or the time allowed is predetermined.
The overall match result is calculated by summing each competitor's percentage score on every stage, relative to the top score on that stage.
Why the Hit Factor Rewards Both Skill Sets
The Hit Factor formula — points scored divided by time taken — is deliberately built so that neither pure speed nor pure accuracy dominates on its own. A competitor who shoots very fast but hits mostly C and D zones will score a lower Hit Factor than one who is slightly slower but consistently hits the A zone, because points earned matter just as much as time spent.
This is what IPSC means by its founding philosophy of Accuracy, Power, and Speed: the scoring system itself is designed to reward all three simultaneously rather than letting a shooter specialize in just one.
Fixed Time and Virginia Count Stages
Not every stage uses open-ended Comstock scoring. In a Virginia Count stage, the number of rounds a competitor may fire is capped in advance, so extra hits beyond the allowed round count are not scored.
In a Fixed Time stage, competitors have a set time limit to engage as many targets as accurately as possible before the timer ends the run, shifting the emphasis toward decision-making under a hard time constraint rather than pure speed.
