Targets in Practical Shooting

An overview of the paper and steel targets used in IPSC matches.

IPSC matches use two main target types: paper targets, scored using A, C, and D zones, and steel or reactive targets, which are scored simply as a hit or a miss.

Steel targets are typically poppers or plates and must fall or react visibly to count as a hit.

Some stages also include "no-shoot" targets, which incur a penalty if hit and must be avoided while engaging nearby targets.

A stage designer determines each target's placement, distance, and visibility, forming part of the tactical challenge of every stage.

Paper Targets and Scoring Zones

IPSC's standard paper target is divided into concentric zones — commonly labeled A, C, and D — with the A zone worth the most points and positioned over the target's center mass. A hit that lands outside all scoring zones, or misses the target entirely, scores zero and can significantly reduce a stage's Hit Factor.

Because paper targets are scored by exactly where each round lands, they reward precise aim even under time pressure, rather than simply rewarding a fast trigger.

Steel Targets and Reaction Requirements

Steel targets — poppers and plates — are scored on a simple hit-or-miss basis, but only if they react as designed: a popper must fall, and a plate must be knocked down or otherwise visibly activated. A hit that doesn't produce the required reaction does not count, which is why shot placement and power factor still matter even against steel.

Stage designers combine paper and steel deliberately, mixing target types and distances to create a realistic test of both precision and target transition speed within a single course of fire.
