How IPSC Works
Stages, courses of fire, scoring, and the structure of a typical match.
An IPSC match consists of several "Stages," each with a different arrangement of paper and steel targets, obstacles, and movement paths.
Before shooting, a competitor may inspect the stage up close (a "walkthrough") and plan their strategy, but the actual run is typically performed only once, without prior practice on that exact layout.
A Range Officer (RO) directs and controls each competitor's run using a standardized set of commands.
Most stages use "Comstock" scoring: the final score comes from dividing total hit points by the time taken (the Hit Factor), so both accuracy and speed directly affect the result.
The match's overall result combines every stage's score, typically as a percentage relative to the top scorer on each stage.
Reading a Stage Briefing
Every stage is documented in a written stage briefing that specifies the target arrangement, the minimum number of rounds, any mandatory positions or movement, and specific procedural requirements. Competitors are expected to plan their run entirely from this briefing and the walkthrough — improvising once the shot timer starts is rarely a good strategy.
The Range Officer's standardized commands — "Make ready," "Are you ready?," "Standby," and the start signal — control exactly when a competitor may load, when the clock starts, and when the course of fire officially ends.
From Raw Time to a Match Result
A stage's raw score is not simply who was fastest. Under Comstock scoring, hit points earned are divided by time taken to produce a Hit Factor — meaning a highly accurate but slightly slower run can outscore a fast but inaccurate one.
Because different stages reward different hit factors, results are normalized: each competitor's stage score becomes a percentage of the best Hit Factor achieved on that stage, and the match winner is whoever accumulates the highest total percentage across every stage combined.
