General IPSC Rules
A general overview of how IPSC's official rules are structured — not a substitute for the official rulebook.
IPSC rules are published in separate official rulebooks for each weapon division (Handgun, Rifle, Shotgun, PCC, Mini Rifle) and are regularly updated by IPSC.
These rules cover three main areas: Safety Rules, Course/Stage Design rules, and Scoring & Penalties.
Safety violations typically result in a disqualification (DQ) and immediate removal from the match, while minor procedural errors usually incur point or time penalties.
Because rules evolve over time, always consult the latest official rulebook at ipsc.org. This page is a general educational overview, not an official rules source.
Who Writes and Updates the Rules
IPSC's rulebooks are maintained centrally by the confederation and revised periodically to reflect new equipment, safety lessons learned from matches, and feedback from the sport's Regional Directors and range officers worldwide. Because each weapon division has its own rulebook, a change to Handgun rules does not automatically apply to Rifle, Shotgun, PCC, or Mini Rifle.
Match organizers and Range Officers are expected to apply whichever rulebook edition IPSC has designated as current for that competition, which is why match invitations typically state which ruleset governs the event.
Penalties Beyond Disqualification
Not every rule violation ends a competitor's match. Procedural errors — such as engaging targets in the wrong order when a specific sequence is mandated, or failing to fully engage a required position — typically add a fixed time penalty rather than removing the competitor from the match.
Scoring penalties also apply for missed targets and for hits on "no-shoot" targets, which subtract points directly from the stage score. Only genuine safety violations, such as an unsafe muzzle direction or a finger on the trigger while moving, result in disqualification.
